Three dimensional (3D) imaging is the process by which computer software tabulates thousands of data points into a volumetric form. Although 3D imaging is not new, its use and application in MRI & CT continues to evolve contributing to more accurate diagnosis and visualization of disease. 3D has grown in popularity as it began to offer the potential of replacing invasive procedures with non-invasive imaging. Magnetic Resonance Angiography(MRA), one example of 3D MRI, allows clinicians to view 3D volumetric data of carotid arteries detect peripheral vascular disease and eliminates the need to order traditional, invasive arteriogram. In addition, 3D studies aid in the detection of some cancers such as breast and colon and also has become an invaluable pre-surgical planning tool.
