Shields opened the state’s first independent Magnetic Resonance Imaging center in Brockton, in 1986. Today, we operate a network of 20 MRI centers throughout Massachusetts performing one in three MRIs in Massachusetts each year.
Our joint venture partners include, Baystate Health, Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Baystate Mary Lane Hospital, Cape Cod Healthcare, Clinton Hospital, HealthAlliance Hospital, Lahey Clinic, Lifespan, Marlborough Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, Southcoast Health System, South Shore Hospital, UMass Memorial Medical Center, UMass Memorial Health Care, and Wing Memorial Hospital.
MRI images offer greater natural contrast than standard x rays, computed tomography scan (CT scan), or ultrasound. MRI also is particularly useful for spotting and distinguishing diseased tissues (tumors and other lesions) early in their development.
A key Shields strength is our outstanding MRI radiologists who are widely recognized for their clinical leadership, particularly in musculoskeletal and neurological MRI applications.
Constant upgrades to our diagnostic equipment ensure that Shields physicians are utilizing the most sophisticated technology available to produce superb images and provide accurate interpretations. In keeping with our reputation for advanced technology, most of our MRI centers are now equipped with 1.5 Tesla High Field Open MRI systems, which provides an alternative for patients who cannot be scanned in traditional “high field” scanners.
