SSOC Honored by ACS

Shields Radiation Oncology Centers honored for ongoing support for ACS.

June 11, 2010

South Suburban Oncology Center, a part of Shields Radiation Oncology Centers located in Quincy, MA, proudly accepted the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) ‘Healthcare Community Partner Award’ at the annual ACS ‘Relay for Life’ fundraiser. The award recognizes the company’s exceptional, ongoing commitment to the American Cancer Society’s mission through patient education, volunteering and financial support and is presented to only 12 Massachusetts organizations annually.

Company-wide Participation Raised More than $11,000 for Relay for Life
Led by their team of ‘Shields Road Runners’ from each of Shields Radiation Oncology Centers’ three Mass locations, ‘Relay for Life’ received company-wide support from all Shields employees.

Tom Shields, Senior Vice President at Shields Health Care Group commented, “At our centers, we see the effect cancer has on patients and their families, every day. Community fundraisers like this inspire hope for everyone involved with this disease and I’m proud that Shields plays such an active role.”

Support went further than individual employee contributions –leading up to the event, Shields launched a series of employee fundraisers such as raffles and events, encouraging donation and volunteering. Impressive participation levels led to raising more than $11,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Shields Commitment to Patient Education
Shields reinforces their corporate commitment to patient education by partnering with ACS to provide cancer patients and their families with information and resources. All Shields Radiation Oncology Centers offer unique patient programs like ‘Look good, Feel better’, a regularly held event that gives cancer patients techniques on how to deal with some of the superficial impacts of the disease like hair and weight loss.
